The Formation of Land and Life
by Anna V.
In the beginning, there was only water and lava. The lava was under water. Apsy and Manky were the god and goddess of the water. Napu and Siki were the god and goddess of the lava. Napu and Siki had a son named Biddy, and a daughter named Kechumaki.
One day Apsy was tired of owning just water. He not only wanted to rule the water, but the lava as well. So he said to Manky, “We should be the rulers of everything, for we are more powerful. Why should the weak people and the children have the privilege of ruling the lava?”
Manky agreed. She said, “You are right. There should only be two rulers, a king and a queen, for everything. I don’t like it how it’s ‘you own this, you own that, you own this you own that......’ We should attack Napu and Siki and win the lava!”
So both Apsy and Manky started sending huge waves down the tunnel that lead to the lava land. It rushed down and met the lava, turning it to stone.
Napu and Siki had to fight really hard to slow down the water. they sent up lava to stop it, but water just turned it solid.
“It is no use!” Napu cried. “How can we stop Apsy and Manky if they keep destroying all that we have?”
“I have and idea,” reported Siki. “If we send the lava up just right, the water would turn it solid, and we would have a solid barrier to stop the water!”
So that is what Napu and Siki did. And it worked! The gods were relieved about this, and also angry at Apsy and Manky.
Siki was so angry, she caused the lava to flow up and up, and up. It went so high that it broke through the surface of the water, forming solid land.
Kechumaki got very happy about their defeat. She jumped into the sky in a big ball of fire. That became the sun.
Biddy placed plants in the land, Trees sprang up, and flowers opened. Shrubs produced delicious fruit.
Napu put all sorts of animals on the land. He made it so they would need water. “There,” he said, “these creatures will drink your water as a punishment for what you tried to do to us.”
Siki wanted and intelligent species to ram the planet. so she made humans. They built villages and fine pieced of art using some if Apsy and Manky’s water.
Apsy and Manky were upset. When they got angry, some of the water steamed up as clouds. If they were really upset, they would cry rain all over the land.
The gods and goddesses of the lava split up the new lands. Siki said, “Since Biddy created all of the trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass that covers the land, he shall rule this land. And because Kechumaki made the sun, she will be its ruler.”
Siki saw that people needed to see in the night. All that the people had to see at night was a little campfire, and they weren't able to wander far from it. “I could place another sun,” thought Siki. “Well, actually, it wouldn’t work. Nobody would get any sleep, except for the nocturnal animals, which would sleep all the time. But if there was something similar to the sun, not as bright, but enough to get around. That way the humans could watch their crops and animals during the night, but the other creatures could sleep.”
So she created the moon. She took a large chunk of rock and put some light on it. Then she tossed it up into the sky. The people of the village appreciated it, and lived their lives better.
The people worshiped the volcano and the gods and goddesses that lived inside it. They used and drank Apsy and Manky’s water. All were happy, just as Napu and Siki had planned.
