The Prince of Egypt
by Miriam G.

Long, long ago in the land of Egypt the Pharaoh was being very cruel to the slaves. He was having all the baby boys killed, in fear that they would overpower the kingdom. One smart and loyal mother took her baby down to the river and set it in a basket made of bulrushes and tar. Then she set the babe in the basket and closed the lid, then pushed it off into the water.

The mother’s daughter, Miriam, watched as it sailed down the river and came to the Pharaohs wife. She picked him up and took him to the Pharaoh. They decided to keep him. They named him Moses. Moses had an older brother named Ramses. They often got in trouble for things like knocking down statues or pillars. They went to parties and did tons of fun things like that.

One day moses saw a peasant girl and she told him that he was a slave from birth, and that he was not really the prince of Egypt. He ran out of there and started to read the walls of the great temples that back then was the way to keep track of important things. People called scribes were the ones that would write all this down. He found out that what she said was true.

The next day he saw a guard beating an old slave. He pushed the guard off the railing and killed him. The guards would beat slaves because back then they thought that they could own people.

He couldn’t stand it any longer. He ran away into the desert. He came to a man named Jethro, who took him into his house and gave him food and water. They let him rest. When he awoke he was scrubbed head to toe. Then they had a celebration for him. There was dancing and more food. He grew quite fond of Jethro’s daughter, Tzipporah. They ended up getting married.

One day as Moses was tending his flock of sheep God appeared. He told moses to go to the land of Egypt and tell the pharaoh to let his people go. Moses complained, and God showed him the miracles that he would perform for Pharaoh.

He did so, and Pharaoh had his magicians do the same. Moses performed ten miracles and the Pharaoh still hardened his heart to let the people go. Then on the last one he finally let the people go because you see the last was that they had to mark lamb’s blood on their door post, or they would have their first born dead. And since Pharaoh didn’t mark lamb’s blood on his door post his son was killed by the angel of death. Pharaoh was very troubled and sad, so he decided to let Moses’ people go.

Moses took the Israelites and they traveled for many a day. They finally came to the Red Sea. All the people were panicking because the Pharaoh had hardened his heart again. He had his whole army coming toward them, and they had no where to go. Then all at once a pillar of fire rushed down from the heavens and stopped the army. They rode in chariots, which was the vehicle in those days.

Then God spoke to Moses, saying that he should pick up his staff and place it in the water. As he did so the water rose and made a path. All the People were amazed at this but took no time to stop and stare. They rushed through the path on to the other side of the sea.

Then as they went, the pillar of fire went into the ground like a worm going into a hole. The Egyptian army ran after the slaves, but as soon as the people crossed to the land the water crashed together like cymbals. All the warriors drowned in the sea. Then the People rejoiced and and sang songs.
